Supported File Types
ProTransfers accepts PNG, JPEG, WebP, SVG, AI, EPS, and PDF artwork files — learn which format is best for your project.
ProTransfers accepts seven file formats for artwork upload: PNG, JPEG, WebP, SVG, AI, EPS, and PDF. All files must be under 50 MB. The format you choose affects processing time and how color information is handled during DTF printing.
Raster Formats
Raster files contain pixel data. They process quickly and work well for photographs, complex illustrations, and artwork with gradients.
| Format | Extension | Transparency | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| PNG | .png | Yes | Artwork with transparent backgrounds — logos on clear film, designs without a white base |
| JPEG | .jpg, .jpeg | No | Photographs and complex images where transparency is not needed |
| WebP | .webp | Yes | Same use cases as PNG with smaller file sizes — recommended if your design software supports it |
Processing time: 2-10 seconds.
Tips for Raster Files
- Use 300 DPI or higher at your intended print size for the sharpest results
- PNG or WebP is recommended when your artwork has transparent areas
- JPEG does not support transparency — any transparent areas will be filled with white
Vector Formats
Vector files contain mathematical descriptions of shapes and text. They scale to any size without quality loss, making them ideal for logos and graphic designs.
| Format | Extension | Spot Colors | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| SVG | .svg | No | Web-standard vector graphics, simple logos and icons |
| Adobe Illustrator | .ai | Yes | Industry-standard garment artwork with Pantone spot colors |
| EPS | .eps | Yes | Legacy vector format common in the printing industry |
| Yes | Documents and artwork exported from various design tools |
Processing time: 15-30 seconds. Vector files require additional processing to prepare for analysis. A progress indicator keeps you informed.
Tips for Vector Files
- Convert text to outlines in your design software before uploading. This ensures text renders correctly regardless of font availability.
- Embed linked images rather than linking to external files. In Adobe Illustrator, use File > Package to embed all assets.
- AI and EPS files preserve Pantone spot colors. If your design uses specific Pantone colors, these formats ensure the most accurate color reproduction.
- Multi-page PDFs and multi-artboard AI files use the first page or artboard for printing.
Choosing the Right Format
| Your Situation | Recommended Format |
|---|---|
| Photograph or complex image | PNG or JPEG |
| Logo or graphic design | AI, EPS, or SVG |
| Design with Pantone spot colors | AI or EPS |
| Transparent background needed | PNG or WebP |
| Fastest processing | PNG, JPEG, or WebP |
| Smallest file size | WebP |
Color Handling by Format
How ProTransfers handles color depends on your file format:
- Raster files (PNG, JPEG, WebP) — colors are analyzed against the printable CMYK color gamut. The color reproduction simulation shows you which colors may shift.
- AI and EPS with Pantone spot colors — spot color definitions are preserved and sent directly to the printing equipment for the closest possible match.
- AI and EPS with CMYK values — your CMYK values are used as-is, giving you precise control over the final print colors.
- SVG and PDF — colors are analyzed the same way as raster files.
Unsupported Formats
ProTransfers does not accept GIF, TIFF, BMP, ICO, or PSD files. If you have artwork in one of these formats, export it as PNG (for raster) or PDF (for vector) from your design software before uploading.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I convert my AI file to PNG before uploading?
No. Upload the AI file directly. Vector files preserve more information — including spot colors, font data, and scalable artwork — that ProTransfers uses to produce the best possible print.
Why do vector files take longer to process?
Vector files need to be prepared for analysis before ProTransfers can evaluate colors and dimensions. This extra step takes 15-30 seconds but produces more accurate results for vector artwork.
Does file format affect pricing?
No. Pricing is based on the physical dimensions and shape of your artwork, not the file format. A 4" x 6" PNG costs the same as a 4" x 6" AI file.
