Asking for artwork help

Help me with my art: how a request works

Every file gets our free print-readiness check. When you want more than that, a background removed, a color changed, a vector version, one button in the studio or the cart, Help me with my art, opens a short request that travels with your order to our art team. Here is what you can ask for, how to ask, and what happens next.

01

What you can ask for

Tell us what you would like done in your own words. These are the things we are asked for most, and the request dialog keeps a note beside the text box on how to ask for each, such as which color to change and what to change it to.

  • Remove background

We cut the background away so only your design prints.

Also a studio tool you can run yourself →

  • Color adjustment

Tell us which color to change and what it should become, with a Pantone or hex value if you have one.

  • Something else

    Describe what you need below.

02

How to ask

Studio or cart

In the studio, once you have set a size and a quantity, step 2 is Artwork Help. It has one button, Help me with my art. Write what you would like done, up to 1,000 characters, choose whether we should print when the work is done or show you a proof first, and save. The step collapses to a card that shows what you asked for, with Edit.

In your cart, every item has the same card under Artwork Help, with Edit and Remove. A saved cart keeps the request with the item. Nothing is sent until you place the order; saving a request only attaches it to the print.

One choice inside the request

Before we print: Just do it, and we print when the work is done, or Show me a proof first, and the order waits for your approval of a proof we send you.

03

What happens after you order

The status

The request reaches our art team with the order. On your order page each item with a request shows it with one of four words: Requested when it is waiting for the team, In progress while it is being worked on, Done when the work is in the file that prints, and Couldn't do this, with the reason, when we could not do what was asked.

If you chose a proof first, the work is done before you hear from us: we send the proof, you approve it or ask for changes on the approval page, and printing waits for that answer. If you chose Just do it, we print when the work is done, and we still ask you first if a change needs your decision.

04

What it costs and how long it takes

Art help is a courtesy of our art team, at no charge. It's always best to prepare your art as far as you can before you order; there is only so much we can do after the fact. If a request is more than we can take on, we'll reach out before we start. Most requests add no time to your order; a complex one may add a day.

The free print-readiness check is separate and happens to every file whether or not you ask for anything. What it covers is on common file issues and how we fix them.

05

Prefer to do it yourself

The studio tools

Much of what you might ask for is also a studio tool that runs in a click, with a preview before anything changes. Each has its own page.

  • Up-Res — soft, fuzzy edges from artwork that is too small to print.
  • Remove Background — complex backgrounds that would arrive as ink on the shirt.
  • Color Knockout — flat white boxes and solid backdrop colors behind a design.
  • Halftone — fades and effects that cannot print, and a heavy ink hand feel.
  • Vectorize — logo art trapped in pixels that can never get sharper.
06

Prefer we don't touch your file?

Print exactly as uploaded

In the studio, under Help me with my art, turn on Print exactly as uploaded. We print the file exactly as you gave it to us: the art team does not review it or change anything. It is an advanced option. Many professional customers choose it because they are confident their artwork is pristine, and it keeps us from correcting an intentional artistic decision.

Common questions

Is a request the same as the free print-readiness check?

No. The check happens to every file before it prints and only touches small technical things that cannot change how the design looks. A request is something you ask for beyond that: a background removed, a color changed, and so on. Everything you do not ask for is left as it is.

Does a request cost anything?

No. Every request we offer today is a courtesy of our art team, at no charge. Most add no time to your order; a complex one may add a day. If a request is more than we can take on, we reach out before we start.

Can I see the result before it prints?

Yes. Choose Show me a proof first when you save the request. We do the work, then send you a proof to approve, and the order waits for your answer. Choose Just do it and we print when the work is done.

How much can I write?

Up to 1,000 characters of plain text. Placement and color notes for the whole item still go in the item's notes field.

Can I change or remove a request?

Until you place the order, yes: the card in the studio and in your cart has Edit and Remove, and a saved cart keeps the request with the item. Once the order is placed the request is with the art team; contact us if something needs to change.

What if you cannot do what I asked?

The request shows Couldn't do this on your order page, with the reason. If that changes what you would receive, we reach out before printing.

Can you print my file exactly as I sent it?

Yes. In the studio, under Help me with my art, turn on Print exactly as uploaded. We print the file exactly as you gave it to us; the art team does not review it or change anything. It is an advanced option for artwork you are confident is pristine.

Ask from the studio

Upload a file, set a size and a quantity, and step 2 is the button. The request rides with the print into your cart and your order.
